Life happens – we all get the blues or downright depressed. This is especially true when the seasons change and the nights get longer. There are times when medication is absolutely necessary. Please consult with your healthcare practitioner before making any decisions. Then there are also natural ways available to help deal with depression. I would just like to share 10 ways I have coped with depression in my life personally.
10 Ways To Deal With The Blues When The Seasons Change
1. Volunteer. Volunteering for a good cause is not only good for alleviating depression, but also for others. Find something you are passionate about and look towards volunteering your time or some money. There are thousands of charities and organizations that would love your help. Or, you could help an elderly person run errands or just sit with them if they don’t have any family in their life. The idea is to get the focus off yourself and I promise when you help someone else in need you spirits will be lifted. Remember – there are others out there worse off.
2. Discover The Secret. The Secret is not something that everyone buys in to. I happen to believe in it 100% because I’ve seen it work firsthand! Some of the messages are vital to eliminating depression. You control your own future by how you think. Self-improvement through self-healing, consider looking into other spiritual self-medicating books. A great course on this topic can be found
3. Write Down Your Thoughts. Writing not only stimulates your brain activity, but it also acts as a great de-stressor. Keep a journal so you can record your thoughts if you are feeling down. The new crave is also coloring – I like to put music on and color thinking about times when I was a little girl trying to color in between the lines. I’m finding I can’t stay in the lines any better now than I did when I was a kid HA! Invest in a well-made journal to increase your creative juices. Here is one I personally like here.
4. Read. My absolute favorite. There is nothing like getting lost in a good story to take your mind off of things. Find some time on the weekend or after work and curl up on the couch with a good book. This simple pleasure is not just relaxing, it is also stimulating.
5. Think Positive. Positive thoughts lead to positive results. Surround yourself with positive energy and this energetic vibe will be released into your lifestyle and daily habits. You will notice it!
6. Consider Getting A Pet. A dog or a cat can provide unconditional love and support, which can lead to stress and anxiety relief. They will lift your spirits in more ways than can be expressed. Dogs can motivate you to exercise and are always around for a cuddle. Ohhhh who doesn’t just LOVE a doggie cuddle?! However, before you consider a pet, make sure you have the financial security and freedom to look after the constant demands of a pet, especially a dog.
7. Find Time To Catch Up With Friends and Family. Sometimes our schedules get so busy that we simply cannot fit in family and friends. This can lead to serious woes and a lack of self-fulfillment and connection. You need to find a balance between work and play. Take a late lunch to catch up with your friends. It’s hard to stay in touch but it’s important to try.
8. Stimulate Your Brain. Grab a crossword puzzle or enjoy the Sudoku in your morning newspaper while eating your breakfast or on the commute to work (if you don’t drive). These fun little games are quick to do and keep your mind sharp and off any problems you may be encountering.
9. Pamper Yourself. Lifting depression includes getting rid of those daily kinks. The best way to sooth the stress or depression away is with a deep therapeutic massage. If you cannot afford a monthly massage, then look to your spouse or partner and swap massages. Buy oil, light candles and turn your living room into a spa.
10. Forgive Others. Forgiveness is not something you can just switch on and off. It can take time to forgive someone, especially if you were really hurt. However, forgiveness starts deep within you and is one of the most important steps of eliminating depression. If you can find it within yourself to forgive, then you are proving to yourself that your are growing stronger which will ultimately help to get rid of depression.
The above list are just a few of the things you can do to help deal with seasonal change depression. Some say getting more light will help, but I happen to think it’s a bit more than that. It’s about keeping your mind off yourself. Give a few of these ideas a try and just watch those blues go away.
